A curved window with a view of the whole street
A curved bay gives a room a lot of glass looking in three or four directions at once. On a house at the front of a street, that includes the pavement, the road and the cars parked along it.
It is also hard to cover: curtains hang awkwardly on a curve, and blinds do not follow it.
Reflective film made to follow the curve
We filmed the bay with a reflective solar film. In daylight, the window now mirrors the street and the parked cars in the photo, so it is no longer easy to see into the room.
From inside, the street is as visible as before, with the glare turned down.
Fitting film to curved glass
Curved glass needs a little more work than flat panes. Where a pane curves, the film can wrinkle as it goes on, so it is shaped as it is applied and smoothed down gradually so it lies flat.
The grey uPVC frame gives a clear edge to trim to, and the film runs right to it all the way round.
A clean, uniform front window
The curved bay reads as a single sweep of mirror glass in a grey frame, with no wrinkles or lines. It is a lovely contrast with the brickwork around it.
It was a one-window job, but it shows how much of the character of a front elevation sits in one piece of glass.
Questions about curved glass
Can film go on curved windows?
Often, yes. Gentle curves are fine. Tighter curves need the film to be shaped as it goes on, and some curves are not suitable. We check at the survey.
Will the film wrinkle on a curved bay?
It should not, if it is fitted properly. Wrinkles are the thing we are working to avoid, and the film is smoothed down gradually along the curve.
Is the finish different on a curved window?
A curved surface reflects differently along its length, so the mirror effect varies a little as you walk past. That is normal.
