A small cabin in full sun
Log cabins look good, and they can become very warm. The walls are solid, but the glazing, in this case a pair of French doors and a side window, takes the full sun and lets the heat in.
In a summerhouse that doubles as a retreat or hobby room, heat is the thing that stops you using it.
Reflective film on the doors and window
The doors and the side window were filmed with a reflective solar film. In the photo, the glass is reflecting the garden, with the grey uPVC frames neat against the timber.
It is honest to say that the lower glass of the French doors still shows items inside. That is typical of reflective film when the interior is bright: it gives glare and heat control and daytime privacy, but it is not a blackout.
A small job with a tidy finish
This was a small job in terms of glass. We cleaned the French doors and side window, applied the film and trimmed it to the uPVC, taking particular care around the door handles and where the two doors meet.
A cooler, calmer cabin
The cabin looks the same from the lawn except for its glass, which is darker and more reflective. Inside, glare is down and it is a more comfortable place to be.
Questions about a log cabin summerhouse
Why can I still see items through the lower door glass?
Reflective film does not make glass opaque. When the room behind it is bright, you can see some detail, especially at lower angles. If you want complete privacy, a frosted film is a better choice.
Is film suitable for a cabin with a lot of timber?
Yes. The film is on the glass and does not touch the timber.
Will the film last outdoors?
It is fitted on the inside face of the glass, which protects it from the weather. It usually lasts a decade or more.
