A small room with a big glass front
A garden office is small and well insulated, which means it holds heat. Its front is three bi-fold doors and a tall side window, so it also takes a lot of sun straight at a desk.
Anyone who works at a screen in a room like that knows how it goes: blinds down by mid-morning, lights on, and the view you built the room for is gone.
Mirror film on the glass
We fitted reflective solar film to the bi-fold doors and the side window. In daylight it reflects the garden and the brick of the house, as the photos show, so the office looks like a block of mirror glass from outside.
From inside, the garden is still visible, and the glare on a screen is reduced.
Worth knowing: If you work in the room in the evening, remember that reflective film works the other way round after dark. The lights inside make the room visible from the garden.
AfterFitting the doors
Bi-fold doors are a set of narrow leaves with their own frames. We filmed the three-panel set leaf by leaf, then did the tall narrow window beside it, cleaning each pane before applying film.
The composite cladding and the aluminium frames give a clean edge, and the film is trimmed right up to the seals.
An office you can use until the sun goes round
The garden room looks sharper from the house, with dark mirrored glass in a neat cladding frame. Inside, there is less need to pull the blinds, which is exactly what a garden room is meant to avoid.
The doors still open fully.
After
AfterQuestions about tinting a garden office
Will film help with screen glare?
Yes. Taking the harshest sun off the glass reduces reflections on a screen and the need to keep blinds down.
Can I still see out when I am working?
Yes. You see the garden through the film as normal, with a little less brightness.
What if I work in the room in the evening?
Reflective film reverses after dark, so people outside can see in when the light is on. If evening privacy matters, a blind is the answer for the hours after sunset.
