A front window one step from the pavement
On a terraced street, the front room is close to the road. People walk past at arm's length, and the bay window makes the whole room visible to them. Upstairs the problem is smaller but the same.
Net curtains work, but they cost you daylight and the view of your own street.
One-way film that lets you keep looking out
We fitted a reflective one-way film to the bay and the upstairs window. From the street it looks like a mirror, and from the inside you can still see the street clearly, which one of the photos shows with our tools still on the sill.
That means no curtains pulled in the daytime, and the room feels bigger for it.
Worth knowing: This is a daytime solution. After dark, with the lights on inside, people on the street can see in. Blinds or curtains for the evening are still needed.
Small windows, steady hands
The bay has several panes, each cut and fitted on its own. Our tools are on the sill in the interior photo.
The glass was cleaned and checked before the film went on, because on a front room window any imperfection is seen daily.
A front room you can sit in
From the pavement the bay and the window above it look like clean mirror panels in the painted brick. In the room, the street view is clear.
It is a very common job for terraced houses, and it is one of the cheapest ways to get the front room back.
After · InsideQuestions about privacy for a terraced house
Does it work for a front window right on the pavement?
In daylight, yes, which is the main time people pass. In the evening, with your lights on, people outside can see in. Blinds or curtains for the evening cover that.
Can film go on the original sash or bay window frames?
Yes. The film is on the glass, not the frame. We check the glass type first.
Will it affect the look of the street?
It will make the window mirror the street in daylight. If you live in a conservation area, check with the council.
