Glass on two sides of the same room
Corner bi-fold doors give a living room a wall that opens in two directions. The downside is that the room takes sun on two sides at once, and the garden decking in front of it is bright enough to make the glass hard to look through.
The aim was to keep the doors completely see-through, so the question was how much heat and glare we could take out while doing that.
A light solar tint that you hardly notice
We chose a light solar control film. From the decking you can still see in through the glass with a little reflection on it, and from inside the garden looks as clear as before, with the brightness dialled down.
We would have gone darker for a room that was suffering badly. Here, light was the right call.
After · InsideLots of leaves, lots of edges
Bi-fold doors are demanding because each leaf is a separate frame with its own seals and trims, so there are more edges than there would be on one large pane. We worked leaf by leaf along each set, cutting the film to fit, with the join at the corner where the two sets meet taking the most care.
The interior photos give the clearest view of the finished work: through the tinted glass, onto the decking, with the living room furniture in the foreground.
What the extension is like now
The living room reads as a single bright space with a softer light at the glass. Standing inside, the garden is as visible as before; standing on the decking, the doors look neat and unremarkable, which is the highest praise we can give a film like this.
It leaves the grey aluminium frames as the main feature of the doors.

After · InsideQuestions about tinting bi-fold doors
How do I choose a tint for bi-fold doors?
Start with what bothers you most. Heat points to a stronger film, glare to a neutral one, and a wish to keep the doors looking clear to a light one. We bring samples so you can hold them up to your own glass in your own daylight.
Will film interfere with the seals between the leaves?
No. We film each pane and stop short of the seals and gaskets, so the leaves fold and close as they should.
Will it change the colour of the garden?
Neutral films keep colours close to natural. Some films add a slight cast, which is why we show samples first and do not pick a film from a catalogue.

Tell us which way they face and how much of the glare you want gone. We will recommend a light or a stronger tint.
