A skylight above the kitchen
A roof lantern is a gift for daylight. It is also a magnifier for sun: the light comes from directly above, all day, and the room below gets the full effect.
On a flat-roof extension, there is nothing to shade it, and it is not practical to fit blinds in a pyramid-shaped lantern.
Reflective film on the glass
Each pane of the lantern was filmed with a reflective solar film. The photos from the roof show it mirroring the clouds, so the effect works from outside as well as inside.
Reflective film looks different depending on how the light is hitting it. On a bright day the lantern reads as a mirror from the roof, while on a duller one you see more of the room through it.
Working at height
The lantern sits on a flat roof, so the photos were taken from the roof itself. The film is applied to the inner face, from inside the room, and checked from outside against the light.
A pyramid lantern is made of several triangular panes. We film each one separately, cutting each pane to its own shape and trimming at the frame.
A calmer room under the lantern
From above, the glass is now a mirror-effect pyramid on the roof. Below, the room is still well lit, with a softer light and less direct heat from above.
A roof lantern is one of the most effective places to use film, because the glass is doing so much of the work.
After
AfterQuestions about roof lantern tinting
Does a roof lantern need a different film?
Often, yes. A lantern gets direct sun from above all day, so a stronger solar film is usually the right choice. We also check the glass type, as lanterns often use toughened or laminated panes.
Is the film fitted inside or outside?
Inside, so it is protected from the weather. The photos on this page were taken from the flat roof.
Could film affect the lantern's warranty?
Possibly. Check what the supplier says, and ask us for the film's technical details if you want to put the question.
