Roof Lantern and Skylight Window Film in the North West

A roof lantern is a gift for daylight. It is also a magnifier for the sun: the light comes from directly overhead, all day, and the room below gets the full effect.

Window film on the glass takes the glare and heat down without blocking the sky, and it is far simpler than fitting blinds to a pyramid. We fit it to roof lanterns, skylights, flat rooflights and glass roofs across the North West. Our fitters offer roof lantern and skylight window film in all five North West counties, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria, with surveys in Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Chester, Preston, Lancaster and Carlisle.

Why overhead glass is the hardest to live with

A wall window gets the sun for part of the day. A roof lantern gets it from sunrise to sunset, and at its strongest when the sun is high. On a flat-roof extension there is nothing to shade it, and the room below can become the warmest part of the house.

Blinds are the usual answer, but a lantern is awkward to blind: a pyramid or a multi-sided shape does not take a standard blind, and a motorised one is expensive.

How we fit it

Film goes on the inside face of each pane, so it is protected from the weather. A lantern is made of several panes, often triangular, and we cut and fit each one separately, trimming to the frame so the finish is even across the whole structure.

Our Heaton Moor job is a good example: a glass pyramid lantern on a flat-roof extension, filmed on every pane. The photos were taken from the roof, where we checked the finished effect.

Glass types and what we check

TypeNotes
Toughened glassCommon in lanterns. Some films are not suitable for large toughened panes in direct sun, so we check size and film choice.
Laminated glassOften used overhead for safety. We check the interlayer and the film for compatibility.
Solar-control glassAlready has a coating. Film may add little, and we may advise against it.
PolycarbonateFlexes with heat. Some films are not suitable.

Rooflight and lantern manufacturers sometimes make film a condition of their warranty. Ask us for the film's technical data.

Lanterns across the North West

We fit film to roof lanterns across Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside. Flat-roof kitchen extensions in suburbs such as Heaton Moor, Chorlton and Didsbury are typical.

Overhead glass takes the strongest sun wherever it is. In Greater Manchester we film roof lanterns on kitchen extensions in Manchester and Salford and the villa suburbs around them, and in Cheshire the lanterns and glass roofs of Chester and the Wilmslow and Alderley Edge belt. In Merseyside the work runs from Liverpool's Victorian villas to Southport and the Wirral, and in Lancashire from Preston and Lancaster to the Fylde coast. In Cumbria we cover Carlisle and the South Lakes for larger glass roofs.

Because roof glass is hard to reach, the access is part of every quote, whether the lantern is in Manchester, Chester, Liverpool or Preston. We work from towers and platforms in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria, and plan Lancaster and Carlisle jobs so the visit is worth the journey. Roof lantern film questions

Is film better than blinds for a lantern?

Film works without anyone touching it, and a lantern is awkward to blind. Many people use both.

Will the film affect the lantern warranty?

It might. Check with the supplier and ask us for the film's technical data.

Can you film a skylight in a pitched roof?

Often, yes. We check the glass and how it is fitted.

Will it make the room dark?

A little less bright. The sky is still visible.

Is it done from inside?

Yes. Film goes on the inside face of the glass.

Do you film roof lanterns and skylights across the North West?

Yes. We film roof lanterns, skylights and glass roofs in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria, including around Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Chester, Preston, Lancaster and Carlisle. Each pane is filmed from inside, and the access needed is included in the fixed quote.
