Window Tinting for Didsbury Homes: Period Villas, Sash Windows and Bay Windows
We provide residential window tinting in Didsbury: professional window film for houses, bungalows and flats, fitted to the glass you already have. Privacy film is the broad answer to overlooked rooms, and the right finish depends on the room and the hour you use it. Fading is mostly an ultraviolet problem, and UV protection film blocks most of it while hardly changing the look of the glass.
Rooms can stay in use while we work, because film goes on one window at a time. Warranty is ten years or more on most films, issued by the manufacturer. From West Didsbury, East Didsbury and Withington out to the edges of Greater Manchester, the process is the same.

Didsbury homes: the glass we see and what it needs
Didsbury is known for its Victorian and Edwardian villas, tall bay windows, sash frames and mature gardens. Film suits these houses well, but they ask more questions than a new-build does. Older glass is thinner and sometimes single. Sash windows have glazing bars. The houses are often in a conservation area, and the owners care how they look from the street.
So this page is about older glass: what we check before choosing a film, and what usually works.
Older glass: what we check, and why
| What we find | What it means for the film |
|---|---|
| Single glazing or old, thin double glazing | Thin glass heats up and cools unevenly, so we use a film that reflects more and absorbs less |
| Sash windows with glazing bars | Each small pane is cut and fitted separately, and the film stops at the bar. The finish is slow, careful work |
| Large bays | Big panes in direct sun are the ones most likely to be stressed by a heat-absorbing film. We check size and shade |
| Etched, leaded or decorative glass | Some of it is left alone, and some films are not suitable. We say so |
| A conservation area | A mirror finish that changes the look from the street may need consent. A near-clear film changes it far less |
A cloakroom window in Didsbury
Our Didsbury job is a small one that shows what film can do quietly: a tall grey aluminium cloakroom window on the ground floor, overlooked, with a good view out that the owners wanted to keep. We fitted reflective one-way privacy film. From outside it is a mirror in daylight, and from inside the garden is clearly visible.
In the evening with the light on, one-way film reverses, which is why we usually suggest frosted film for a WC that is used at night. The owners chose one-way film deliberately, for the daytime view, and know its limit. The detail is on the Didsbury job page, and the options are on our privacy film page.

Bay windows on the road
A Didsbury villa often has its best room at the front, behind a deep bay. One-way film gives daytime privacy and keeps the view, and a near-clear film cuts heat and UV without altering the look. A lot of Didsbury homes also have wooden floors and good furniture next to those windows, so UV protection is as much a reason as privacy. See UV and anti-fade window film.

Pricing a job in Didsbury
Our starting rates are about £60 per square metre for entry-level film and £95 for Solar Gard, and the fitting is included in both. Here is the sum for three typical jobs. A bay window is worth roughly 3.5 m², so about £210 to £330; the front windows of a typical house is roughly 10 m², about £600 to £950; and a kitchen window is roughly 1.2 m², about £70 to £115.
The survey is free and the price you are given afterwards does not move. On older or protected buildings we may recommend a premium near-clear film, which sits at the upper end of the range. Our Withington job gives a sense of scale. You can also try the estimator on the window film prices page.
Didsbury residential window film questions
Can you film sash windows?
Yes. Each pane is cut and fitted separately, and the film stops at the glazing bars. It is slow, careful work, and we choose a film that suits the older glass and the look of the building.
Is it safe on old, thin glass?
Usually, with the right film. We check the glass and use a film that absorbs little heat, because films that absorb more can stress thin or old glass. If a pane is not suitable, we say so rather than risk it.
Do I need consent in a conservation area?
A reflective film that changes how the building looks from the street may. A near-clear film changes it far less. Check with the council. The safest approach is to ask the council before you book, particularly for a reflective finish or a listed building. Interior film is reversible, and a near-clear film is much less likely to raise an objection, so we usually suggest samples of those first.
Will film protect my floors and furniture?
It slows fading, because most solar films block up to 99% of UV. Furniture, floors and fabrics in rooms with big south or west-facing windows benefit most, and a clear UV film does the job with hardly any change to the look.
How long does window film last?
Professionally fitted window film typically lasts ten years or more. Older windows are often single glazed or thin, so we choose a film that reflects more than it absorbs to keep both glass and film in good order. Most of our films carry a 10-year manufacturer's warranty, and Solar Gard often outlasts its warranty. Life depends on the film, how much sun it sees and how it is cleaned, and we explain how to look after it at handover.
Can window film be removed?
Yes. On older glass, careful removal matters, and we use heat or steam rather than aggressive scraping. Film can be taken off, usually leaving the glass clean, using heat or steam and careful scraping, and it can be replaced with a different film if your needs change. That makes it suitable for rented homes, leased premises and glass you may want to change later. See our window film removal and replacement service.
