Window Tinting for Chorlton Homes: New Extensions, Patio Doors and Edwardian Semis
Homeowners ask us for residential window tinting in Chorlton when a room is too hot, too bright or too exposed. Film is fitted to the inside of existing windows, which makes it quicker and cheaper than replacing glass. For rooms that need privacy at every hour, frosted film is the only film that never switches off. One-way film turns glass into a one-way mirror in daylight, so you see out and the street does not see in.
We can often tell you from photos alone whether film will help, and roughly what it would cost. The films we use carry manufacturer warranties, typically ten years or more. We work in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Whalley Range and Withington and across Greater Manchester.

Residential window film in Chorlton: the local picture
Chorlton's Edwardian and Victorian houses are being extended constantly, and almost every extension is a wall of new glass: big sliding doors, a roof light, a glass side return. It is a lovely space until the first hot Saturday, when the new kitchen is the hottest room in the house. That is the point at which people discover film, and the point at which it would have been cheaper to think about it earlier.
This page is for anyone planning, or finishing, a Chorlton extension.
When to think about film
| Stage | What you can do | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Designing the extension | Specify solar-control glass, or plan to film the glass afterwards | Specifying glass costs more up front. Film is cheaper, can be added later and can be removed |
| Choosing the doors | Tell your supplier you may film the glass | Some glazing makers put conditions on film in their warranties. Ask, and we can supply the film's technical data |
| Just after the build | Film once the glass is clean and the site is finished | Dust and plaster on the glass is the enemy of a clean finish |
| After the first summer | Film whichever rooms turn out to be the problem | You will know exactly where the heat and glare are |
Patio doors on a new extension in Chorlton
Our Chorlton job is three-panel grey aluminium sliding patio doors on a new extension, filmed while the building work was still being finished. The owners wanted the glare and heat out of the room and some daytime privacy from the garden. We fitted reflective solar control film, which mirrors the garden in daylight and takes the heat down.
The photo of the doors on a half-finished extension is a good reminder that film is a late-stage job: it goes on once the glass is clean. The detail is on the Chorlton job page.

Edwardian semis and Victorian terraces
In the older houses the extension is the problem, and the front is a question of privacy. A terrace front room opens onto the pavement, and a bay on an Edwardian semi catches the low sun. Mirror film gives daytime privacy and keeps the view, with blinds or frosted film for the evening. See one-way mirror film and frosted film. Chorlton also has conservation areas, so a reflective finish that changes how a house looks from the street may need consent.

Privacy and glare control at the back of the house, with the garden view kept.Local details that shape the work in Chorlton
- Edwardian semis and Victorian terraces
- Chorlton's streets are lined with Edwardian semis and terraces, many extended at the back. Front bays want daytime privacy and the new kitchen extensions want a light solar film.
- Chorlton Water Park and the meadows
- Houses facing the meadows and the water park have big outlooks, so light films that keep the view natural are better than dark tints.
Window film prices around Chorlton
Film is priced per square metre, and the fitting is part of that price. Expect from about £60 for entry-level film and £95 for Solar Gard. Some examples: a glazed front door and side panels, £150 to £240 (about 2.5 m²); a bay window, £210 to £330 (about 3.5 m²); a conservatory, £900 to £1,420 (about 15 m²).
On an estate of similar houses, grouping neighbours can lower the cost per house. Once measured, you get one written price that does not change. For more examples, see the window film prices page.
Chorlton residential window film questions
Can film go on a brand-new extension?
Yes, once the glass is clean and the work is finished. Check your glazing supplier's conditions on film first, because some manufacturers have conditions on film in their warranties, and we can provide the technical data.
Is film cheaper than solar-control glass?
Usually, and it can be added later. Specifying the right glass at the start can be more permanent, but it is more expensive and cannot be changed. Film can be chosen once you know where the heat and glare really are.
Will film suit my Edwardian semi?
Yes. We choose a film for the glass and the look. Near-clear and light films change the appearance least, and the film is fitted to the inside of the glass, so the frames and the character of the house are untouched.
Do I need consent in a conservation area?
A reflective film that changes how the house looks from the street may. Check with the council. Film on the inside of the glass is reversible and often needs no consent, but a reflective finish that changes how a building looks from outside may need it, and a listed building needs checking first. A near-clear or light neutral film changes the look far less. We advise at the survey and supply the technical data and a description of the work.
Is there a warranty on window film?
Warranties come from the film maker, usually 10 years or more, and we give you the documentation when the job is finished. Older windows are often single glazed or thin, so we choose a film that reflects more than it absorbs to keep both glass and film in good order. Entry-level film is warranted for 10 years too, and premium and Solar Gard films often last beyond their stated term.
Do you offer a free survey in Chorlton?
The survey is free and carries no obligation. For older or listed buildings, the survey is where we talk through consent and the choice of near-clear film. We come to your home in Chorlton, look at the glass, measure up and hold samples against your windows, then send one fixed written quote.
