A front room on show
A box bay window is one of the largest panes of glass on a house and one of the most visible. It is also usually the front room: the one that people sit in, and the one the street can see into.
A net curtain is the traditional answer, but it makes the room darker and a bit dated.
Reflective film on the whole bay
We filmed all the panes of the bay with a reflective solar film. In daylight, the glass mirrors the front garden and the street, which the photos show clearly.
From inside the room, the street is as visible as before, with less glare from the sun at the front.
A bay with several faces
A box bay has a front and two sides, and each face has to be cut and applied separately. The corners are the points to watch, because the film should run right to the edge of each pane without overlapping the frame.
The rosewood frame has a warm brown finish, and a clean trim line against it is what makes the mirror finish look intentional.
Privacy during the day, and a sharper front
The bay now looks like a pane of mirror in a brown frame, with the front garden and street in it. It is a small piece of work with a big effect on how the front of the house feels.
After dark, blinds or curtains take over, because reflective film works from the brighter side.
AfterQuestions about filming a bay window
Can film go on a bay with coloured frames?
Yes. The film is on the glass, so the frame colour is not affected. A clean trim line against a coloured frame is what keeps it looking deliberate.
Will it work with my existing nets or blinds?
Yes, though many people find they need them less during the day.
Will it look odd from the street?
A reflective film makes the window look like a mirror in daylight. It is a very common look for front bays, and we show you a sample against your own window first.
