Frosted Window Film Across the North West: Etched, Dusted and Opaque Looks
Frosted window film gives clear glass an etched, dusted look. It blocks the view in both directions, day and night, while letting most of the daylight through, which makes it the simplest and most dependable privacy film there is.
You may also see it sold as etched, dusted, sandblasted or opaque window film. Those names describe the same family of films, and we explain each below. We fit it on front doors, bathrooms, offices, treatment rooms and glass partitions across the North West. From Greater Manchester and Cheshire to Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria, we offer frosted window film in every North West city, including Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Chester, Preston, Lancaster and Carlisle.

In short
Frosted film blurs everything on the other side of the glass and keeps most of the light. Nobody can see detail through it from either side, at any hour. It is fitted to the glass you already have, and it can be taken off again later.
Frosted, etched, dusted and opaque: what the words mean
They overlap, and suppliers use them loosely. This is how we use them.
- Frosted
- The general term. A translucent film that scatters the light passing through it, so shapes and colours show but detail does not.
- Etched
- Mimics acid-etched or sandblasted glass: a crisp, even matt finish. It is the look people usually want when they ask for etched glass on a door or partition, including cut-out designs and borders.
- Dusted
- Often a softer, finer frost, sometimes sold as dusted crystal. It looks like a light dusting of frost and suits bathrooms, offices and treatment rooms.
- Opaque
- Strictly, a film that lets no light through. Frosted film is translucent, not opaque. A white frosted finish sits closest to opaque while still passing some light. For fully solid glass, see blackout and whiteout film.

AfterFrosted film, etched glass, frosted glass and spray: how they compare
| Option | What it is | Cost and disruption | Can it be changed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frosted window film | A film applied to your existing glass | Low. Done in place, often in a day | Yes. It can be removed later |
| Etched or sandblasted glass | The glass itself is treated | High. The glass is taken out or replaced | No. It is permanent |
| New frosted glass | A replacement pane with the frost built in | Highest. New units and fitting | No |
| Peel-and-stick static film | A thin DIY film from a shop | Lowest, but edges lift and it can look patchy | Yes, but it rarely lasts |
| Spray-on frosting | An aerosol applied to the glass | Cheap, but streaks easily | Hard to remove cleanly |
Where we fit frosted film most
Entrances
Side panels, top lights and fully glazed doors. Daylight into the hall, but no view along it.
Bathrooms and cloakrooms
Small windows that are overlooked at all hours, where a blind would get damp.
Offices, treatment rooms and partitions
Meeting rooms, clinics and glass walls where staff and clients need to be private. See offices and healthcare.
Plain, banded, gradient or cut-out
Frosted film does not have to cover the whole pane. A band across the middle of a glass partition gives privacy at seated and standing eye level and leaves the glass above and below clear. A border leaves the centre open. A gradient fades from clear to frosted. A pattern or a logo can be cut out of the film.
For patterns, gradients and printed designs, see our decorative and patterned film page. For logos and signage, see branded window film. A frosted band also doubles as a marker on glass doors and screens, covered in glass manifestation.

Fitting, curing and cleaning
Frosted film shows specks of dust more than clear glass does, so we clean each pane carefully and check it before the film goes on. It is applied wet, squeegeed flat and trimmed to the edge of the glass. It can look cloudy for a few weeks while the moisture dries out.
Once it has cured, clean it with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Avoid abrasive pads and ammonia cleaners. If you rent, or want to change things later, the film can be taken off and the adhesive cleaned from the glass. See window film removal and replacement.

Frosted window film questions
Is etched window film the same as frosted film?
They are very close. Etched film imitates sandblasted or acid-etched glass with a crisp, even matt finish, and frosted is the broader term. In practice we match the look you want from samples.
What is dusted window film?
A softer, finer frost, often sold as dusted crystal. It looks like a light dusting of frost and lets a little more light through than some stronger frosts.
Is frosted film opaque?
No, frosted film is translucent: it lets light through and blocks detail. If you need no light at all, see blackout and whiteout film.
Will it make my hall or room dark?
Only slightly. Frosted film lets most daylight through and removes the view.
Does it work at night?
Yes. Unlike one-way film, frosted film blocks the view in both directions at all times. See one-way mirror film.
Will steam damage it?
No. It is made for bathrooms. Let it cure fully before heavy use of a shower room.
Is it cheaper than frosted glass?
Usually, and much quicker. It keeps your existing glass and can be removed later. Entry-level film starts at about £60 per square metre.
Do you fit frosted window film across the North West?
Yes. We fit frosted window film in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria, including in Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Chester, Preston, Lancaster and Carlisle. A bathroom window or a front door can often be quoted from a photo, and most jobs are finished in a day.
