A solid door with glass on both sides
The front door here is solid, but the glass panels on either side of it run the full height of the door. They bring daylight into a large entrance hall, and they also give anyone on the drive a view of everything inside.
On a house this size the hall is a big space, usually a lived-in one, and a clear view from the front step into the middle of it is not what most people have in mind.
Frosted film, in full, on both panels
We fitted frosted film to both side panels. It keeps the daylight, and it removes the view. From outside you now see soft, even frosting that blurs everything behind it.
Frosted film was the right choice here because it works day and night and needs no blinds. A one-way film would not have made sense next to a front door.
The details that matter on a front entrance
- Size: two tall panels, each filmed as one sheet so there are no horizontal joins.
- Edges: trimmed tight to the frame on all four sides, since they are looked at close up by everyone who comes to the door.
- Cleaning: glass cleaned and checked twice, because specks show through frosted film.
- Matching: both panels done at the same time so the frosting is identical.
A private entrance that still feels light
The three photos show the front entrance from the drive and from the side. The panels look neat and uniform on the grey front door and the rendered wall, and the hall behind is no longer on view.
It is a quick job and an inexpensive one compared with replacing glazed panels.
After
AfterQuestions about frosting glass beside a front door
Will frosted film make my hall darker?
Slightly, but not much. Frosted film lets most daylight through and only removes the view.
Can frosted film have a pattern or a clear border?
Yes. Frosted film can be cut into borders, stripes or patterns, which suits a larger entrance. We can show examples when we quote.
Is frosted film better than replacing the glass?
For privacy alone, it is far cheaper than new obscured glass, and it keeps the existing frames and seals. If the glass itself is broken or failing, replacement is the answer.
