Glass you can see straight through
A back door that is mostly glass lets plenty of light into a kitchen or hallway. It also lets anyone passing along the side of the house see straight in, and the same goes for a ground-floor casement window next to it.
The usual answer is a net curtain or a blind. They work, but they also block the daylight you wanted from the glass in the first place.
Frosted film that keeps the light
Frosted film gives the glass an etched, misted look. It blocks the view in both directions, day and night, and still lets daylight through, which makes it a better fit than a blind for an entrance people use every day.
We fitted it to the whole of the glazed door and both panes of the window, so the two match from the outside.
On the day
This was a small job in terms of glass, but the door leaves little margin for error. The film has to be cut to the exact size of the glazed area and applied without trapped dust, because frosted film shows specks in a way that clear glass does not.
We trimmed it tight to the uPVC frame on all sides and left a clean, even edge.
Privacy that you stop noticing
From outside the door and window now read as clean, uniform frosted glass. Shapes and shadows are blurred, details are not visible, and in the daytime the effect is very consistent.
It is the sort of fix that people tend to do on one door and then ask us to repeat elsewhere in the house.
Worth knowing: Frosted film hides detail, not shapes. A person standing right up against the glass will still show as a blur.
AfterQuestions about frosting a door and window
Can the film be removed later?
Yes. Film can be taken off, and any adhesive left on the glass cleaned away. It is much easier than changing glass, which is part of why it suits rental properties.
Will frosted film stop people seeing shapes?
It blurs detail but not always shapes. Someone standing right against the glass can show as a shadow. For a door that opens into a kitchen or hall, that level of privacy is what most people want.
Is frosted film better than a blind here?
On a door that is used all day, usually yes. There is nothing to rattle, pull or leave closed, and the daylight still comes through.
