The roof is the hot part
In most conservatories the roof does the damage. It faces the sky, it is a large area of glass, and it receives sun for most of the day. Under it, the room warms up long before the walls have a chance to.
That is what usually makes a conservatory feel unusable between spring and autumn: the seating area directly under the glass becomes too bright and too hot to stay in.
Film on the roof panels
We treated the glass roof panels with a reflective solar control film. It deals with the sun where it comes in, over your head, so the heat and brightness are reduced before they reach the room.
The three photos from inside show the result looking up: a blue-tinted roof, the black frame crisp against it, with a chandelier visible in the room below.
Fitting a roof from underneath
Film on a conservatory roof is applied to the underside of each panel. We worked along each run of glass from the ridge down, one panel at a time. The close-up shot at the ridge shows how the film is trimmed right up to the frame and the join, which is the part that gets looked at every day afterwards.
Before any of that, we check what the roof is made of. This one is glass, which suits film well. A polycarbonate roof is a different question and needs a different conversation.
How it looks and feels
The roof now has an even blue-grey tint with some reflection, and it reads as part of the room instead of as a sheet of bare glass. The room is calmer under it, with less glare on screens and furniture.
There were no blinds to fit across the roof and no changes to the frame.

After · InsideQuestions about conservatory roof tinting
Does film work on a polycarbonate conservatory roof?
Not always. Glass roofs suit film well. Polycarbonate sheets expand and flex with heat, and some films are not suitable for them. We check what the roof is made of before we quote, and tell you plainly if film is not the right answer.
Could film affect my glazing warranty?
Some glazing manufacturers set conditions on film, particularly for sealed units. Check your paperwork, and ask us for the film manufacturer's technical data if you want to put the question to your installer.
Will it make the conservatory dark?
A little less bright, yes, but conservatory roofs let in a lot of light, and people usually notice the comfort before they notice the dimming. We show samples against your own roof so you can judge it.
