The problem: a patio on show from the garden
The house has a raised patio at the back, edged with a clear glass balustrade between black posts. The glass keeps the view open and keeps people safe, but it also left the patio furniture, and anyone sitting out, in full view from the garden below.
The usual fixes, such as fence panels, screens and planters, take up patio space and are awkward to add around fixed glass. The customer wanted the privacy without losing the patio or changing the balustrade, so the glass itself needed treating.
Before
BeforeThe solution: black privacy film on the glass
We fitted a gloss black blackout privacy film. Unlike one-way mirror film, which still lets you see out, blackout film is solid from both sides, which suits a balustrade where the aim is to hide the patio completely. Because the posts are black, the finished panels look like a planned part of the design.
Installation details
- Glass: the glass balustrade panels between the black posts, on the raised rear patio.
- Film: gloss black blackout privacy film, one finish across all the panels.
- Preparation: each panel was cleaned and checked before any film went on.
- Fitting: film cut to size for each panel, applied wet, squeegeed flat and trimmed to the edge of the glass.
- Order of work: panel by panel. Our progress photo shows the first panel finished beside panels still clear.
In progressThe result: a private patio with a clean black finish
The filmed panels now read as solid gloss black. They can't be seen through from the garden or from the patio, so the patio is private again, and the finish picks up the black posts.
Good to know: blackout film blocks the view both ways. If you want privacy from outside but still want to see out, one-way privacy film is the alternative, and we can show you samples against your own glass before you decide.
After
AfterQuestions about film on a glass balustrade
Does film affect the safety of a glass balustrade?
No. The film sits on the glass and the glass stays in its fixings. Balustrade glass is toughened or laminated, so we check the type before we choose the film.
Will the black film get hot?
Dark film absorbs more heat, which is a consideration on large panes in direct sun. We check the glass type and size at the survey, and say if a different film would suit better.
Can the film be removed later?
Yes, if you want to change the look. The adhesive can be cleaned from the glass afterwards.
